Bruce Rauner says he has the backing of voters from outside the Republican Party.

The Republican nominee has a new group of supporters called Democrats and Independents for Rauner. One of those endorsing Rauner is Newton N. Minow, a former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission who once worked for the administration of Gov. Adlai Stevenson.

“I’m a strong Democrat,” Minow said, “but I’m taking a leave of absence from my party because Illinois is in desperate shape.”

Other members of this group include former State Sen. James Meeks who once chaired the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. He was elected twice to the Illinois Senate, once as an independent and once as a Democrat.

While Rauner says he’ll work with members of both parties, he’ll still back other Republicans running in November.

“I will be supporting everyone of the Republican ticket,” Rauner said, “but our candidacy and our message and this election is about fundamental change.”

Rauner believes the issues he’s focusing on, such as term limits and lower taxes, appeal to voters outside of the Republican base.
